After the end of the second world war, Amby Legere, a physical education teacher at the University of New Brunswick proposed the idea of a summer camp for children with disabilities.
Local businessman, Ashely Colter offered land that he owned on the shore of Grand Lake and the Rotary Club of Fredericton agreed that a summer camp would be an excellent project for the club to undertake.
The first camp was held for 3 weeks, beginning on July 19, 1952 and was comprised of 18 boys.

Today, Easter Seals operates Camp Rotary. There are a total of 20 permanent on-site accessible buildings with a sleeping capacity of 140.
With a Focus on Ability campers of any age and ability challenges are welcomed every summer. The Camp runs from May through August and serves well over 425 campers every year.
Rotary clubs continue to support the camp with
- fundraising activities supporting camp fees for children and adults to attend,
- Camp Clean Up Day - getting the camp ready for the start of the season.
- purchase of a van in 2024 to support transport of goods and staff
- Camp Rotary Liaison Committee
The Camp Rotary Liaison Committee brings together NB Rotarians and representatives of Easter Seals NB to continue the long and successful partnership. This committee plans out the support and help needed to provide amazing annual camp experiences.
The Rotary clubs supporting the camp are proud of its legacy.
